St.
John’s Academy
St. John’s Academy is a small, non-profit tutoring program,
designed to meet the needs of newcomer and at-risk youth in the South Riverdale
district of Toronto. This is one of the projects of St. John the Compassionate
Mission (www.stjohnsmission.org).
Modeled on private tutoring programs, we are able to offer this program for
free to low income families.
We are looking for a Director
for St. John’s Academy. This is a paid full-time
position (35 hours a week), responsible for planning and coordinating the
tutoring program for middle school to early high school students. St. John the Compassionate Mission is an
apostolate
of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese. Accommodation, (including
board) may be available with this post.
Responsibilities:
- Plan lessons
for students in English and Math
- Monitor the
progress of each student throughout the program, adjusting the approach when
necessary
- Communicate
with parents and teachers to find out a child’s specific strengths and needs
- Teach
specific study skills strategies to students and monitor goals set
- Evaluate the
program and give feedback to parents, volunteer tutors
- Register new
and returning students- assess needs (standardized tests, report cards, meet
with parents)
- Organize and
facilitate tutor training
- Scheduling of students and volunteers
- Work with
volunteers and address any concerns they may have
- Ensure
maintenance, up-keep and security of the youth program facility
- Tutor
students when needed
- Ensure
appropriate supervision and safety of tutors and youth participants
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in
Education
- Experience
working with children and youth from diverse backgrounds
- An understanding
of the barriers and challenges faced by youth in culturally diverse, low-income
communities
- Ability to
work flexible hours, including regular evening work
- Police check
and First Aid
