- Real Break Houston 2019
Trip Mission – On Aug. 26, 2017 Hurricane Harvey walloped the coast of Texas as a Category 4 hurricane, tying with Hurricane Katrina as the costliest hurricane in US history creating $125 billion in losses. More devastating was the 103 people who died in Texas and the more than 30,000 people who were displaced from their homes. In response, IOCC was asked to provide Emotional and Spiritual Care at Red Cross and other shelters in Houston, Beaumont, and Port Arthur, Texas. By Sept. 1 an IOCC Emergency Response vehicle and personnel were on the ground and started to clean up 70 homes that had been flooded. By March of 2018, the focus had shifted to making critical repairs for people to get back into their homes and IOCC lead work teams from March through August 2018 to do that.
The 2019 OCF/IOCC Real Break will continue this work in Houston. The base of operations from the first days of Hurricane Harvey response have been St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Houston. The parish has embraced hundreds of IOCC volunteers since Hurricane Harvey and is excited to host Real Break students during the first week of Lent. Students should be prepared for 4 days of hard work which may be inside or outside. Students could be doing various tasks from framing, to roofing, and painting. They will also enjoy fellowship and daily worship in an active Orthodox parish.
The goals of this trip are to assist in building a home or performing critical repairs on a home that was badly damaged by Hurricane Harvey. Students will have the opportunity to witness first-hand the damage that can be caused by natural disasters, interact with families impacted by Hurricane Harvey, and see how their efforts can help bring hope to people still hurting a year and a half after the hurricane. And, in addition, students will have the opportunity to experience Houston’s multi-cultural landscape.
